Diphthongs
 

Spelling Help Again & Again

Diphthongs are two vowels together that make a new sound.

When children encounter a vowel whose sound changes next to another vowel, they are unsure how to pronounce them. They see two vowels and try to make the first one a long vowel sound. Plus, w and y are sometimes vowels. This adds to the confusion.

Practicing diphthongs help children learn to spell because they learn different sounds instead of spelling rules.
